This illustration represents the process by which a Heegaard diagram encoding the topology of a knot complement can be constructed from a special type of knot diagram called a one-bridge presentation. This figure was drawn by Philip Ording, and used in a paper of ours to come up with a counterexample to a conjecture which would equate two seemingly (and, in fact) different knot invariants
